About Sidestep Pathways
We are a specialized re-engagement intervention, rebuilding the bridge between school anxiety and meaningful education.
Sidestep is a trauma-informed, short-term alternative provision intervention designed exclusively for young people (ages 11–18) experiencing severe Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA), neurodivergent burnout, and acute anxiety.
We do not operate as a permanent alternative school or a behaviour-focused unit. Instead, we act as a clinical and therapeutic circuit-breaker. Our sole mission is to stabilise a young person's nervous system, rebuild their confidence, and provide a meticulously managed transition framework to safely re-engage them with education.
Our Core Values
Psychological Safety Re-engagement is impossible while a child is in a state of fight, flight, or freeze. Safety is our prerequisite.
Sustained Transition We do not believe in quick fixes. We measure our success by how safely and permanently a young person reintegrates into their long-term education.
Adaptive Frameworks We wrap our intervention, induction, and transition around the specific needs of the young person and the school.
We are delighted to be based at the fabulous Anderton Centre in Chorley
Re-Engagement in Two Phases
We recognize that the journey back to education cannot be rushed. True re-engagement requires a gradual runway, which is why our offer combines a core intervention with an extended, bespoke transition package.
Phase 1: The 12-Week Core Intervention
Our core intervention is designed to establish safety, assess needs, and build baseline stamina through a unique Split-Day Model:
The 2-Week "No-Fail" Induction: To protect school budgets and ensure absolute suitability, the first 10 days of every referral serve as a mandatory evaluation phase. If our multidisciplinary team determines the placement is not the right fit for the student, the contract can be terminated immediately with no further financial obligation beyond the induction fee.
Morning: Students start their day at home, engaging in low-demand remote check-ins with their dedicated mentors and accessing structured online learning via the accredited NISAI platform.
Afternoon: At 12:30 PM—purposefully bypassing the chaotic morning rush hour—students transition to our low-arousal base at the Anderton Centre for project-based learning, outdoor education, and emotional regulation work.
Phase 2: The Bespoke Transition Back to Education
The sharp shock of returning to a mainstream environment is where most placements fail. At Sidestep, transition is our key focus. Following the core 12-week block, we provide an additional 4, 8, or 12 weeks of dedicated reintegration support.
During this phase, our mentors work directly inside the host school alongside internal pastoral staff, physically accompanying the student into classrooms, adapting timetables, and slowly increasing mainstream attendance to ensure the re-engagement sticks permanently.
Who We Partner With
🏫 For Schools & Commissioners
We are your partners in statutory compliance, safeguarding, and permanent placement success. We understand that schools dread "cliff-edge" provisions that return a fragile student to a busy corridor without a robust plan.
Financial security: Our 2-week "No-Fail" induction phase ensures you only pay for a full placement if the student is ready and able to engage.
The Managed Runway: Our flexible 4, 8, or 12-week post-intervention transition package ensures that our mentors do the heavy lifting of integrating the student back into your environment.
Bulletproof Tracking: We maintain rigid, twice-daily dual-registration reporting windows (10:15 AM for digital engagement and 1:15 PM for physical arrival) to keep your registers audit-ready,
Clinical Data for EHCPs: Backed by Educational Psychologists and SEND specialists, we provide high-fidelity profiling data to support your school's long-term funding reviews and statutory assessments.
🏡 For Families & Parents
We know the heartbreak of watching your child isolate themselves from the world. You are not alone, and your child is not failing. Sidestep completely removes the high-pressure environment of the standard school day. We work at your child’s pace to lower their anxiety at home, and we stay right by their side for weeks during their transition phase, ensuring they feel safe every single step of the way back into the classroom.
🌱 For Young People
If school feels completely impossible right now, Sidestep is a space where you can take a breath. There are no crowded hallways, no uniform pressures, and no expectations to mask who you are. Our mentors are here to help you find your feet again at the Anderton Centre, and when you feel ready to start stepping back into school, we will walk in with you. You won't have to face it alone.
🤝 For Our Supporters & Donors
Sidestep operates as a dedicated non-profit organization tackling the UK’s growing school-refusal crisis at the grassroots level. Standard funding models rarely cover the intensive, high-ratio mentor support (1:2 and 1:3 staffing) required to safely guide a vulnerable young person out of their bedroom and back into long-term education. Your investments fund frontline mentor hours across both the core 12-week intervention and our extended transition phases, permanently changing the life trajectories of isolated young people.
